2035 There is 1 robot for every 5 people in existence. The NS-5 is the most advanced version yet, or so everyone thinks. One was built different. His name, yes name, was Sonny. Some people say that family has nothing to do with blood, I tend to agree. So what does determine family? Can only humans comprehend the ties of love? I think this movie shows us otherwise. I think it shows that, given the time and tending, Robots could too begin to understand love, anger, hate, and even family. Sonny refers to his creator as his father. He makes friends. He finds the purpose for his life and understands feeling and emotion. The line is not blurred in this movie, it is erased. The things that we have always said separate man from machine were taken out of the equation. They are now equals. Humans vs. Robots, OR Humans are Robots? These articles show us that the line is already beginning to be crossed. to be blurred and pushed and smeared. These are humans that have been altered and integrated with technology. This is not some dreamers episode of Star Trek or Star Wars, this is real life. These are real people with real abilities. These are real Cyborgs. A terrible old man psychologically breaks his niece, who moved in with him to take care of him. Then, out of brilliance and spite, he makes a robot to do exactly that once he is dead. Where is the line here? Is it between the late Uncle and his robotic reincarnation? Or is it between Barbera and the robot? Perhaps both? Maybe the line lies in the robot controlling the human. After full development the robot takes on the mannerisms and even the name of Uncle Simon. He bosses around Barbera in the exact way that her Uncle used to. She is trapped inside the same old hose, with the same old insults, and the same demands. Does the fact that the robot is in charge mean that the line has officially been crossed? I think so. When something can feel, and think, and love does it matter what it is made of? Humans are made up of chemical reactions and macromolecules. Things that could feasibly be grown in a lab. The things that make humans different from all of the other walking biological experiments on earth is our ability to feel. Our ability to have creative thoughts. If a machine is given the ability to do such things, to feel, to see, to believe, then how is it different that a person of flesh and bone? What makes humans different than robots? Is the shooting of Alicia destruction of property or murder? This is where the lines get blurry. Where we begin to question what makes a person worth more than a machine. |
